The new academic year began with the Giordani Group participating in the E-MRS Fall Meeting 2026 in Warsaw, Poland.

Prof. Silvia Giordani led the organisation of Symposium M, entitled “Functional Materials at the Biointerface: Multiscale Interactions and Approaches”, which brought together researchers from around the world to discuss recent developments at the interface of nanomaterials, biomedicine, and materials science.

Prof. Giordani organised the symposium together with Dr Francesco Calzaferri and Dr Rossella Castagna, putting together a programme featuring eight invited speakers working across different areas of the field:

  • Kenneth A. Dawson (University College Dublin, Ireland)
  • Giuseppe Barillaro (University of Pisa, Italy)
  • Chiara Bertarelli (Politecnico di Milano, Italy)
  • Rajendra Kurapati (IISER TVM, India)
  • Sara Pellegrino (University of Milan, Italy)
  • Eva Maria Garcia-Frutos (Madrid Institute of Material Sciences, ICMM-CSIC, Spain)
  • Thierry Djenizian (Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Mines de Saint-Etienne, France)
  • Zengbo Wang (Bangor University, UK)

The programme also included 17 contributed talks, among them presentations from four postdoctoral researchers from the Giordani Group: Dr Diego A. Acevedo Guzman, Dr Riccardo Ossanna, Dr Francesco Bellina, and Dr Wanting Zhang.

The group also contributed to the poster session with two projects: “From Coffee to Carbon Dots: Synthesis and Surface Engineering for Enhanced Fluorescence” and “Evaluation of Biocompatibility of Transferrin-Functionalized Carbon Nano-Onions in Glioblastoma Cell Line”, presented by Dr Diego A. Acevedo Guzman and Dr Wanting Zhang.

Presenting the latest research from the Giordani Group

Dr Riccardo Ossanna, Dr Francesco Bellina, Dr Diego A. Acevedo Guzman, and Dr Wanting Zhang presented recent work from the group, covering topics ranging from the rational design and engineering of carbon nano-onions and carbon dots to recent developments within the ALERT consortium.

The presentations led to discussions with researchers from different institutions and provided an opportunity to exchange ideas and establish new scientific connections.

More broadly, Symposium M highlighted the value of interdisciplinary approaches to research at the interface of nanomaterials and biomedical science. The discussions brought together perspectives from materials science, biology, and nanomedicine, illustrating the potential of combining expertise across these areas.

For the Giordani Group, the E-MRS Fall Meeting provided an opportunity to present ongoing research to an international audience, exchange ideas with colleagues, and develop new connections for future collaborations. Congratulations to Prof. Silvia Giordani and the Giordani Group on their participation in the E-MRS Fall Meeting 2026.
