Call for Contributions: Functional Materials at the Biointerface

We are pleased to announce a new thematic issue of the Beilstein Journal of Nanotechnology, Functional Materials at the Biointerface, co-edited by Prof. Silvia Giordani (Dublin City University), Dr. Francesco Calzaferri (Institut des Biomolecules Max Mousseron, Montpellier), and Dr. Rossella Castagna (Politecnico di Milano).
Functional materials that respond to and interact with external stimuli are opening new opportunities to investigate and modulate biological systems. This thematic issue brings together recent advances in the design and application of functional materials across multiple length scales, from molecular and cellular interactions to tissue-level organization and biomedical applications.
The issue welcomes contributions exploring material–biological interactions, cellular behaviour, tissue properties and organization, and the development of functional nano-, micro- and macroscopic systems for biological applications, including approaches with potential for clinical translation.
We particularly encourage interdisciplinary contributions spanning nanoscience and nanotechnology, materials science, chemistry, physics, cell biology, pharmaceutics, bioengineering, and related fields. By bringing together diverse perspectives, the issue aims to foster new collaborations and advance our understanding of how functional materials can be used to interact with and control biological systems.
Submission deadline: 31 March 2027
