On 4 June, Prof. Silvia Giordani was invited as a speaker at the first Italian Research Day in Ireland, held in Dublin and organised by the Embassy of Italy in Dublin in collaboration with the Italian Institute of Culture.

The event was held at the St Helen’s Hotel of Dublin and brought together more than 80 Italian researchers from leading Irish universities and research centres, with the aim of fostering dialogue, collaboration, and visibility for the Italian research and innovation community in Ireland.

The interdisciplinary morning session was opened by Michela Magrì, head of the italian institute of culture and followed by some opening remarks given by the italian Ambassador to Ireland H. E. Nicola Faganello.

Prof. Giordani was first presented with the insignia of Officer of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic by the ambassador on behalf of the President of Italy Sergio Mattarella, one of the highest honours awarded by the Italian Republic. The award was formally conferred in June 2025 and was presented to Professor Giordani at a ceremony held at the Italian Embassy in Dublin.

Prof. Giordani then gave an insightful talk where she described the research activities of the Giordani Group at Dublin City University, illustrating the potential of carbon nanoparticles for the development of innovative therapeutic applications against cancer.

The event continued with four other interdisciplinary talks where Marco Bellardi (UCD), Goran Dominioni (DCU), Massimiliano Mascherini (Eurofound) e Valeria Nicolosi (Trinity College) went over some of their research activities.

In these talks, many research areas were covered including nanomaterials, nanotechnology, maritime decarbonization, the literature in the XIX century and the analysis of the current job market.

The event provided a valuable opportunity to strengthen connections among Italian researchers in Ireland and to promote the contribution of Italian science and innovation within the Irish academic and research landscape.

Later that evening, the celebrations continued at the St Helen’s Hotel in Dublin for the Italian Republic Day reception, which welcomed over 300 guests, including Irish authorities, members of the diplomatic corps, representatives of the Italian community, and the local business community. During his address, Ambassador Nicola Faganello highlighted the historical significance of the 80th anniversary of the Italian Republic, with further celebrations taking place in the coming days in Cork and Galway.
