The Balance between Closed and Open Forms of Spiropyrans in the Solid State

Abstract

We present three new crystal structures of members from the photochromic spiropyran family, including a rare example of an open (merocyanine) form. The molecular structures are systematically compared with existing crystallographically relevant data, and a new avenue for stabilizing open spiropyran forms in the solid-state is postulated. © 2010 The Royal Society of Chemistry.
