Federica Zingaro is a PhD student in Nanotechnology at University of Trieste (CERIC co-founded) under the supervision of Dr. A. Gianoncelli and Dr. Lorella Pascolo, and she is visiting Prof. Silvia Giordani’s research group for 3 months. Her research project aims to unravel the internalisation, accumulation and reproductive toxicological human risks associated with long-term exposure to micro- and nano-plastics (MNPs) in in vitro models (THP-1 cell line, epithelial cell lines) and human samples. During her stay at the Dublin City University, she will focus on the synthesis of Carbon Dots (CDs)-doped NPs. To date, it is crucial the use of model MNPs to minimise the high variance of MNPs shapes, size, and compositions to study the toxicological cell stress responses upon NPs exposure, by combing standard laboratory techniques with advanced microscopy and spectroscopy tools at ELETTRA Sincrotrone Trieste, Italy.
